TRIआज is the latest collection of plays by Mrinal Mathur. The plays capture today’s issues, through his inimitably sardonic lens. They are largely bereft of stipulations of design, and are written for a staging with economy of space, setting and cast, even when having several characters.Teen Tumhari Taraf is a series of sketches on the hypocritic existence of middle-class urban Indians. From doctors and patients, to portly stakeholders in a typical Indian marriage drama, to petty office bearers. From activists to activist theatre practitioners.Paanch Rupaiya Baarah Aana is a play that runs real time to a reporter interviewing various constituents participating in a farmers’ rally in Delhi protesting the agrarian crisis in India. The Death Penalty is a play written for an adult only audience as it deals with the sensitive issue of child rape, and what its disturbing reality means for the cause of justice. The book is intended for private circulation only so that interested theatre groups can ‘triage’ the plays and bring to life on stage, what they believe should survive as their work. All works are open to any group for staging, and if required evolving; in a collaboration with the playwright, contactable at playwrightmrinal@gmail.com.
